Personal Relationship Education

Implementation

At St. John Fisher, we strive to develop our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and this is fundamental to our beliefs as a Catholic school.

To achieve this, each class from Reception through to Year 6 will be following a new programme called PRE, Personal Relationships Education. This new approach encompasses all of the PSHE curriculum using the Ten Ten religious scheme of work. This will be used to resource the lessons through the Christian teachings, fit for life in today’s modern world.  Alongside and in union with this, the lessons will be supplemented by using the Jigsaw programme.

We also teach OWL (Our Wider Learning) Sessions as part of our PSHE curriculum so children can learn about and ask questions about current local, national and global issues, by looking at newspaper articles and video clips such as Newsround.

By the time our pupils leave St John Fisher, we will endeavour to ensure that they:

• Know and understand what is meant by a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally and how to pursue one

• Are aware of safety issues and to know how to stay safe at home, in school and when influenced by their peers or others both socially and online

• Understand what makes a good and long-lasting relationship with others

• Have respect and empathy for all others

• Learn how to be thoughtful and responsible members of their community and their school

• Become active members of a democratic society

Impact

The PRE programme of work provides our school with an effective curriculum for wellbeing. Children are encouraged to develop the vocabulary and confidence to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings to become emotionally literate. They will know when and how they can seek the support of others. This intends to promote a positive impact on the whole child as they learn to build self-esteem and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them. Beyond this carefully structured and planned programme, our curriculum also provides our children with a variety of experiences that have the potential to promote their personal, moral, social and cultural development.
