Hello everyone!
Task: In this lesson, children will read and interpret bar charts which have a range of scales. Some children may misread the scales on a bar chart, assuming that each division always represents 1. To help address this, draw attention to the scale by asking: What do you notice about the scale on the vertical axis of this chart? What do the numbers increase by each time? Children may work out comparison questions by working out the value of each bar, rather than by comparing the height of each bar. Draw children’s attention to the structure of a bar chart. Ask: What does it mean if the bar for one category is higher than the bar for another? Will this always be the case? Do you need to work out the value of each bar in order to compare them?
