In this lesson, children will use their understanding of place value to use written methods for solving multiplications using the expanded method in column format. They will solve mixed problems, including those in context. Children may have some place value misconceptions and may not be able to place digits in their correct columns, i.e. they may think that 25 × 3 is 5 × 3 and 2 × 3. To support them ask: What does the 2 stand for? Can you show it using drawing base 10 equipment?
